Base Methodology for OnlineColleges.me’s 2024 Online College Rankings

    1. Create List of Eligible Schools and Programs

To be eligible for this ranking, schools were required to meet the following criteria based on government data provided by The Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS).

    • Institutional accreditation from an organization recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.
    • At least one program in the subject area offered partially or fully online.
    1. Assign Weightings

After creating the list of eligible schools, OnlineColleges.me data scientists assigned weights and ranked schools based on a mix of affordability, support services, and online program availability metrics. Online program availability and overall affordability metrics received the heaviest weightings.

    Online Program Availability

    • Number of online programs in subject area reported by school to the U.S. Department of Education. Because exact numbers change often and can be difficult to verify, we use a range-based scoring system: 0-5 online programs = 1 star; 6-10 = 2 stars; 11-15 = 3 stars; 16-20 = 4 stars; 21+ = 5 stars. In our design, laptop icons = stars.
    • For degree-specific pages, ex: Psychology degrees, we list the current number of online programs available at that school for that degree type, as self-reported by the schools.

    Affordability

    • Cost – Relative cost of attendance compared to peer schools on the list. Based on tuition and fees per academic year.
    • Students w/ Institutional Aid – Percentage of students who receive financial aid from the school itself.

    Support Services

    • Academic Counseling – Existence of this service on campus or online.
    • Career Placement – Existence of this service on campus or online.

Surveying Online Degrees in Business

Before starting down your college path, it’s a good idea to think about your professional goals, your dream job, and what level of education you’ll need to get there. As a business major, you’ll have options to earn a business degree online at every level of your education.

Getting Started with an Online Associate in Business

An associate degree in business (typically called an associate degree in business administration) is a basic, entry-level business degree option. This online degree in business prepares you for employment in administration and management positions in the public, private, and nonprofit sectors. An associate business degree online also offers you the ability to complete foundational coursework at a more affordable cost before transferring to a four-year school to earn a bachelor’s degree. Typically the curriculum combines major-specific coursework with liberal arts/general education courses in English, mathematics, the humanities, and the natural and social sciences. Business courses include principles of business economics, finance, human resource management, and project management.

Business associate degree programs are designed to be completed with 18 months to two years of full-time study. They’re most often available through local community colleges, but you’ll also find business degrees available through schools that are 100% online. Local community college programs may include some courses online as well.

For more information, be sure to visit our online associate degree in business webpage.

Earning Your Bachelor’s Degree in Business Online

The bachelor’s degree is the most popular degree choice for students looking to enter the business profession. In fact, bachelor’s degrees in business are among the most marketable of all undergraduate degrees. Business administration is the most common bachelor’s in business major. Other business-related majors include accounting, finance, management, marketing, and business economics. Like associate degrees, bachelor’s degrees in business combine business-related courses with coursework in the liberal arts and sciences. A bachelor’s in business prepares you for entry-level administration and management jobs as well as graduate-level business programs.

Bachelor’s degrees in business are typically presented in the traditional four-year, full-time format—although you may be able to complete your program in as little as three years by taking courses during the summer. Online business degrees at the bachelor’s level are quite common and, in fact, among the most popular online degrees. They’re available from dozens of quality public and private colleges and universities, many of which offer their programs 100% online.

Advancing with an Online Master’s in Business

Continuing the trend, business master’s degrees are among the most common of all master’s programs offered, with the MBA the single most popular graduate degree of any type. Master’s degrees in business are also popular online, with dozens of 100% online programs available. The reason for their popularity is simple: Master’s degrees in business are practically a requirement if you’re seeking to advance into a senior (and sometimes even mid-level) administration or management position, particularly with larger businesses and corporations.

Both online and on-campus business master’s programs are offered in a variety of majors, concentrations, and formats (full-time, part-time, self-paced). Programs typically take one to two years. Popular options include business management, accounting, finance, marketing, healthcare management, and human resource management.

Online Doctorates in Business: The Ultimate Degree

With MBAs becoming the standard for higher level business careers, it’s no surprise that more and more students are moving up to earn doctorates in business. You’ll find two basic types of doctoral degrees in the business field: the doctor of business administration (DBA) and the PhD in business. The PhD in business is academic-focused and prepares graduates for careers in advanced research and faculty positions in postsecondary education. Business PhD programs typically require three to five years to complete depending on the student’s chosen study pace. The DBA is based on applied research and is geared toward students seeking top-tier positions in the operation of companies. Most DBA programs are part-time and designed for you to complete in as few as three years. Fully online and partially online master’s degrees in business are readily available for both doctorate types.

Find out more about business doctorates by visiting our PhD in business degree and doctor of business administration pages.

Additional Business Education Paths

The business world evolves at a rapid pace, so it’s important to continue to add to your business knowledge throughout your career to stay on top of industry trends. Fortunately, you can do so without the time and expense of taking on a whole new degree program. High-quality, fully online undergraduate or graduate business certificates are offered by the same colleges and universities as the online degrees in business discussed above. Here’s a look at what’s available:

Online Undergraduate Certificates in Business

Undergraduate certificates in business provide expanded or specialized knowledge to students who are pursuing an undergraduate business degree online or in person or have completed their degree. Common specializations include business administration, business management, accounting, marketing, data analytics, and human resource management. Some schools offer these certificates to anyone with a bachelor’s (or higher) degree, regardless of major; others offer their undergrad certificates to business majors only. Completion times for undergraduate business certificate programs vary from several months to a year or more depending mostly on your specialization and study pace.

Online Graduate Certificates in Business

Graduate certificates in business serve two primary purposes. First, they provide current business master’s students and graduates the chance to expand their knowledge, add value to their degrees, and enhance their resumes. Second, they offer prospective grad students the opportunity to start earning credits toward their business master’s before starting their programs. Like their undergrad counterparts, business graduate certificates are most commonly offered in specialized areas of the business field, including human resources management, supply chain management, strategic leadership, taxation, marketing analytics, and innovation and entrepreneurship. You’ll also find a few general business certificates that provide knowledge and skills in core business practices and strategies.

Professional Certificates and Bootcamps in Business

In addition to traditional undergraduate and graduate business certificates, a large and growing number of alternative online business education credentials and programs cater to your specific needs and interests. These programs are most often presented in the form of professional certificate and business “bootcamp” programs lasting anywhere from a few days to several weeks (most are self-paced). They’re offered primarily by massive open online course providers, with many developed in collaboration with top colleges and universities. In some cases you may be able to use these courses to earn credits toward your business bachelor’s or master’s degree program. Program costs vary widely, from free to several thousand dollars. The vast majority are affordable.

Examples of online professional certificate programs include these from Coursera, edX, and Cornell University. Examples of online business bootcamps include these from Udemy and MIT.

FAQs on Business Degrees Online

Now that you know about the different types of business degrees online, you’re bound to have a few questions. Below are answers to some of the most common questions about earning a business degree online.

  • Are online business degrees accredited?

The answer is an unequivocal yes. In fact, you’d be hard-pressed to find an online business degree program today that isn’t just as fully and properly accredited as its traditional on-campus counterpart. The first type of accreditation to look for is institutional accreditation, which concerns the college or university as a whole. Institutional accreditation is provided by regional and national accrediting agencies recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. You’ll also be looking for accreditation of your specific business degree program. Major accreditors of U.S.-based business schools include the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB), the Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs, and the International Accreditation Council for Business Education (IACBE).

To confirm proper accreditation of any online business degree program you’re considering, contact the program or visit the accrediting agency websites.

  • How much does an online business degree cost?

The price of an online degree in business varies from program to program, depending first on the degree level (associate, bachelor’s, master’s, etc.). Several other major factors impact cost as well:

    • In-State vs. Out-of-State Residency: Public colleges and universities often charge a higher tuition rate if you’re not a resident of that state. However, there’s a trend toward charging a single rate to all online students, regardless of their residency.
    • Public vs. Private School: As a general rule public colleges and universities charge lower tuition rates than private schools, at least when it comes to in-state residents. This isn’t always the case, though. Remember that many private schools offer substantial scholarship and grant opportunities that mitigate their higher costs.
    • Online vs. On-campus: Some schools charge an additional per-credit or per-semester fee for their online courses. Most often the amount is small, but not always. Keep in mind, though, that when it comes to overall program cost, your savings on transportation to and from campus will likely more than make up for online fees.
  • Is financial aid available for my online business degree?

As discussed above, online business degree programs are accredited in the same ways as traditional on-campus programs. As a result, all the common forms of financial aid that are available for on-campus business degrees are available for your online business degree as well. This includes scholarships, grants, assistantships, fellowships (for grad students), work-study, employer tuition reimbursement programs, and VA benefits (for military vets). Student loans, like those available through the Federal Student Aid program, also are available. Keep in mind, though, funding resources may not be available if you’re taking a certificate program. If you have questions about funding, be sure to contact your school’s financial aid office.
To learn more about financial aid for your online degree in business, visit our financial aid and scholarship webpages.

  • How much do online business degree holders make?

Earnings for those with undergraduate business degrees are higher than for those with undergrad degrees generally. According to recent figures from Payscale.com, the average annual base salary for an employee with a bachelor of business administration degree is $73,000, while the average annual base salary for bachelor degree holders generally is $67,000. The numbers are even better on the graduate level. Again, according to Payscale.com, the average annual base salary for employees with an MBA is $92,000. That’s $10,000 higher than master of science degree holders generally and a whopping $24,000 higher than master of arts degree holders generally.

Of course these are average salary figures. What you actually make with your online degree in business will depend on several factors, including your specific employer and job title, geographic location, and level of work experience.

  • Are business degree holders in high demand?

Overall, demand for employees with business degrees is healthy and expected to stay that way into the foreseeable future. For example, employment in business and financial operations occupations in the U.S. is predicted to grow by 8% between 2020 and 2030, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. And demand really starts to heat up when you reach the graduate level. That’s particularly true for MBA grads, according to sources such as The Wall Street Journal, Financial Times, and the Graduate Management Admission Council.

  • What skills and knowledge do I need to succeed in a business degree program?

Whether you’re pursuing a business degree on campus or getting a business degree online, the skills you’ll need are mostly the same. Strong organizational, leadership, and time management skills are at the top of the list. Also important are skills in networking, negotiating, decision-making, and problem-solving. Additionally, a solid foundational knowledge of both basic math and economics is extremely helpful. If you’re uncertain about your current skills, consider taking some classes to help get you up to speed before starting your business degree online. And once you’ve started your studies, be sure to take full advantage of the student academic support services your college or university offers.
