Inside Online Learning Formats

Finding the program that best matches when, where, and how you learn is critical to your academic success. So, before enrolling in an online college in North Dakota, familiarize yourself with the various modes, methods, and formats used by schools to deliver program content. To get you started, below are the most common online course delivery modes used by online colleges in North Dakota, along with real program examples.

100% Online vs. Hybrid or Blended

Online degree programs are presented in either fully online or partially online (hybrid or blended) formats. In most cases, fully online programs are those that deliver 100% of their content via distance learning. We say “in most cases” because some programs that describe themselves as fully online actually mean that all academic coursework is delivered online but that other components (such as labs, exams, or short-term residencies) require on-campus attendance. Additionally, online programs leading to state licensure or certification, like nursing and teaching programs, include in-person practice hours.

Hybrid and blended programs mix online and on-campus components. Although sometimes used interchangeably, the terms “hybrid” and “blended” refer to slightly different formats. Hybrid programs are those whose online components almost completely or partly replace in-person ones, while blended programs supplement in-person classes with online components (assignments, readings, etc.). Take a look at these examples at online colleges in North Dakota to see which feels like the best fit for you.

Bachelor of Science in Business Administration at the University of Mary (Blended/Hybrid)

The University of Mary (UM) is a private Benedictine university in Bismarck. UM offers several undergraduate and graduate degrees and certificates online, including the Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with a blended format option. The program provides students with the best practices and critical thinking knowledge and skills needed to launch professional careers in business as well as prepare for MBA studies. The blended format includes both online and on-campus components.

Online courses are delivered 100% online in an asynchronous format. On-campus class sessions are held in the evening and available at UM locations in Bismarck, Fargo, and Watford City, as well as in Billings, Montana. Earning the degree requires a total of 124 credits. As with most bachelor’s degrees, students should expect to commit to four years of full-time study. However, students with enough previously earned transferable general education credits can complete all major-specific courses in as little as 2 1/3 years.

The current tuition rate for the program is $460/credit. The degree is offered through UM’s Gary Tharaldson School of Business and is accredited by the International Accreditation Council for Business Education

Associate of Applied Science in Information and Communications Technology: Software Engineering at North Dakota State College of Science (Fully Online)

North Dakota is home to five public state college campuses offering online associate degree programs, many of which can be completed entirely online. The AAS in Information and Communications Technology: Software Engineering available through North Dakota State College of Science (NDSCS) is one of those fully online programs. The curriculum for the AAS in software engineering program is a combination of computer science and general education courses, all available online. Students also have the option of combining both online and face-to-face classes on NDSCS’s Fargo campus. Graduates with this degree are prepared for entry-level positions in software development and engineering, as well as to transfer to a four-year college or university to pursue a bachelor’s degree in software engineering or a closely related field.

As you might expect from a public state college, the tuition rate for NDSCS’s AAS in software engineering is an exceptionally affordable $156.11/credit. The current total estimated cost of this two-year full-time degree program (including fees, books, computer, etc.) is $16,673.21.

Asynchronous vs. Synchronous: What’s the Difference?

Online course content is delivered either asynchronously or synchronously. Asynchronous delivery refers to content that can be accessed and completed at any time. This makes online programs with asynchronous delivery very popular, particularly with working professionals who can’t take the time during the day to attend online classes on specific days and times. Conversely, synchronous content requires attendance at specifically scheduled times. In most cases, this means livestreamed class sessions delivered via Zoom or a similar video-conferencing app. The advantage of synchronous content is that it offers the opportunity to interact with instructors and fellow students in real-time.

Bachelor of Arts in Behavioral Health at the University of Jamestown (Asynchronous)

Students interested in starting a career or preparing for graduate studies in behavioral health will want to take a look at the Bachelor of Arts in Behavioral Health offered by the University of Jamestown (UJ). Earning the degree requires 43 credits of required core and elective psychology and behavioral health coursework along with 81 credits of general education coursework earned at UJ or transferred from other accredited schools. All major-specific coursework is offered 100% online in an asynchronous format. However, students have the option of attending live lectures and office hours online. Students also participate in clinical and preceptorship experiences that allow them to apply what they’ve learned.

Depending on licensure requirements in the student’s resident state, graduates of this online college program in North Dakota are qualified to take on careers in a wide range of occupations, including mental health counselor, substance abuse counselor, child protective services worker, correctional counselor, and others. Tuition is $330/credit— surprisingly affordable for a private college.

Bachelor of Science in Social Work at the University of North Dakota (Synchronous)

The University of North Dakota offers its Bachelor of Science in Social Work with both on-campus and hybrid online options. Online students attend most classes with their on-campus counterparts synchronously via livestream, allowing them the benefit of real-time interaction with their instructors and fellow students. Students come to campus to participate in hands-on activities that apply the knowledge gained in their online classes. In addition, students complete 450 clock hours in an in-person field placement at program-affiliated social work agencies. Graduates of the program meet the academic requirements for social work licensure in North Dakota and several other states. Students have access to important support services including free online tutoring, unlimited academic coaching, and online access to library, writing, career, financial, and veteran and military services.

The 2022-2023 tuition rate (including fees) for the program is $462.16/credit. Active-duty military with federal tuition assistance are eligible for a discounted per-credit tuition rate of $250. All students who meet eligibility criteria and submit their applications by the priority deadline automatically receive scholarships valued at up to $14,000 for new students and up to $2,000 for transfer students.

Part-Time vs. Full-Time: Which Is for You?

The best online colleges in North Dakota offer both full-time and part-time programs much like their on-campus programs. Some programs, in fact, offer both full-time and part-time options for the same program. Part-time formats are especially popular since they provide working students the ability to continue full-time employment while they pursue their college studies. Full-time formats, on the other hand, offer the benefit of shorter program lengths, thus allowing students to earn their degrees and move on—and move up—in their careers more quickly.

Master of Education at Mayville State University (Part-Time)

The master of education program at Mayville State University is an excellent example of an online degree program with both part-time and full-time options. The curriculum consists of core education coursework along with courses in one of three specialized tracks: adult teaching and learning (32 total credits), innovative teaching practices (32 total credits), and special education (34 total credits). The innovative teaching practices and special education tracks are designed for working teachers and require a current teaching license. The adult teaching and learning track is designed for students in careers outside of the education field who are interested in developing the knowledge and skills to teach adult learners.

Courses in this online college program in North Dakota are eight weeks in length and delivered 100% online in an asynchronous format. Students have the option of completing one to three courses in each eight-week program block. Tuition is $454.05/credit (including fees) and applies to all students regardless of state or country of residency.

Master of Science in Human Development and Family Science: Gerontology at North Dakota State University (Full-Time)

Another graduate degree program featuring both full-time and part-time options is the master of science in human development and family science: gerontology from North Dakota State University. The MS provides students with a range of skills focused on the aging processes of middle age and into later life. Graduates are prepared to take on a variety of leadership roles in the aging services sector as well as continue with their studies to earn a doctoral degree. Coursework in the 36-credit curriculum is delivered 100% online with no campus visits required. Full-time students can complete all degree requirements in two years by taking nine credits of coursework each semester.

The gerontology program at North Dakota State is offered through the Great Plains Interactive Distance Education Alliance (GP IDEA), a consortium of public universities throughout the U.S. offering affordable online degrees and certificates. Students in the master’s program can take courses from any GP IDEA partner university that count toward the degree. The current tuition price of $600/credit (including all program fees) is the same for students in all GP IDEA graduate degree programs regardless of the specific university they attend.

Accreditation for Online Colleges in North Dakota

Postsecondary accreditation is the process used for vetting colleges and universities, as well as the programs they offer, to ensure that they meet acceptable levels of academic quality. Proper accreditation is of utmost importance because it’s your way of knowing that any degree program you’re interested in will be worth your time and money.

There are two fundamental forms of postsecondary accreditation to look for. The first is programmatic accreditation, which concerns the quality of individual degree programs. Programmatic accreditation is administered by several dozen accrediting organizations, each of which focuses on degree programs in a particular discipline. You’ll find that not all academic fields are covered by programmatic accreditors. However, programmatic accreditation is essential for degree programs whose students go on to careers that require state licensure or certification (like nursing, teaching, and engineering) and in fields that are otherwise highly regulated.

The second form of accreditation, institutional accreditation, involves the overall academic quality of colleges and universities themselves. Institutional accreditation of postsecondary schools in the U.S. is handled by a group of independent regional and national accrediting agencies recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. The regional accreditor of colleges and universities in North Dakota is the Higher Learning Commission.

Be sure to visit our Guide to Accreditation to learn more about the importance of postsecondary accreditation and accredited online colleges in North Dakota and around the country.

Cost of Your Online College Degree in ND

Cost is a key factor for any college student, no matter where they go to school, what they major in, or how they study. That’s just as true for students at online colleges in North Dakota. To give you an idea of what you might pay for your North Dakota college education, here are the most recent (2020-2021) figures from the National Center for Education Statistics showing the average annual cost of tuition and fees for students in four-year degree programs in North Dakota:

  • Public (in-state residents): $9,065
  • Public (out-of-state residents): $13,501
  • Private: $16,408

These are, of course, only averages. What you actually pay for your program depends on several factors, such as:

  • Whether you attend a public or private school. Private colleges often, though not always, charge higher tuition rates than public colleges.
  • Your state residency status. Public schools often charge higher rates to out-of-state residents.
  • Your degree level (undergraduate or graduate).
  • The total credits your program requires.

In the chart below, you’ll find current undergraduate tuition rates for five North Dakota colleges that offer both online and on-campus degree programs. Bear in mind that these are tuition rates only and don’t include additional costs such as school and program fees, books, supplies, etc. Remember, though, that as an online student you’ll be saving money by not needing to travel to and from campus.
